Four Ways To Get More Decluttering Done With Limited Time

To get more decluttering done during a specific period of time is a very good thing to want. No one seems to have extra time on their hands these days, so it’s a good thing if you are able to get the most out of your time. If you are searching for ways to get more decluttering done, here are four helpful hints that will assist you with decluttering and organizing or cleaning up your rooms.

Avoid any interruptions so that you are able to concentrate on decluttering. Put your phone on voice-mail, turn off your TV, say “no” to distractions! You might even consider closing yourself within the room you are cleaning and placing a sign saying something like “Hard at Work: Interrupt Only With EMERGENCIES.” Make sure your children have something to keep them occupied for the whole time you plan to declutter!Give yourself a break. If you decide to designate a full Decluttering Day, remember to plan some stress breaks for throughout the day. Remember, working to the point of total brain fatigue and muscle tension will never do you any good. Plan little treats for yourself! If you’d like, why not schedule the little breaks as rewards for whenever you’ve finished a particular chore.Realize that you will have your own approach! Just as we are all different in other ways, we all have diverse organizational styles. There are countless ways to get more decluttering done, so before you get started, do some quick research and find out which ways will work best for you! Check out some of the ideas in the links below. If you want to get more decluttering done, your best chance is to find tricks that enhance your personal style, not change it. Getting organized should make you feel good, not burdened.Follow your plan. The best-laid plans often fall victim to their makers. While spontaneity is great, plans are made to be followed! There is a fine line between being spontaneous and jumping from small task to small task… and plain procrastination. Once you’ve come up with a good plan for tackling a task, stay with it. Only you can prevent yourself from wavering.

Clutter Organizing? Top 3 Declutter Tips Revealed

CLICK HERE to clear the clutter for good!

Lately you simply hate your clutter! Organizing the chaos and getting rid of clutter in your house has become a nightmare for you! No matter how hard you try, it grows and grows, and it’s getting embarrassing to have guests over. You need some help with your clutter. Organizing tips and ideas on how to get your house neat and tidy again are numerous, but here are my personal Top 3 Tips On Clearing The Clutter and Organizing Your House!

Fight emotional and psychological attachment to items you never use, and probably never will.   An example? In the back of my jam-packed kitchen cupboards was a collection of brand new Tupperware bowls I bought years ago (the kind with the lids that are super kid-friendly). They are lovely and practical, and above all, I knew I had paid some nice coin for them. BUT, they didn’t match my dishes set, so I never used them.  (I know, silly, isn’t it?) As I was decluttering the other day, I came across them and tried to justify keeping them.  I couldn’t.  Even though I had paid quite a bit for them, they were not doing me any good; if fact, they were wasting my precious storage space.  My sister was overjoyed to take them off my hands when I offered them to her, as they were perfect for her young daughter’s meals.  I felt so proud of myself!  I made my sister happy, and, I convinced myself to part with some of the clutter that I really didn’t need!Use a system to clear the clutter. Getting Motivated to Clean up

Posted by Karen Biko in Challenge

Tags: How to Get Organized, living organized

I’ve watched a few of those hoarding shows that they show on TV.  It draws you in and sometimes it’s amazing to think that people actually live with that much clutter in their lives.  These are generally extreme cases and take a lot of work to not only clean up the clutter, but deal with the issues that the hoarder has.

I don’t like waste, and that is one of the things that puts me into the category of hoarder.  I feel that someone might be able to use it and I don’t like to see stuff go into the garbage that shouldn’t.  Then often I hold on to things in case they “might come in handy”…and sometimes that is very true.  Other times I will hold on to things and not even remember that I have them.  The funniest part is when I actually get rid of stuff and then  all of  a sudden need the thing that I just got rid of.

But that’s life.  I’ve done the garage sale, I’ve donated things to charity, I’ve sold things on Kijiji, and I’ve given things away on Kijiji.  I still have things to remove from my life, and that happens slowly sometimes.  When you are working through the declutter and getting back into organizing your life keep in mind your reasons for doing this…

Making my life simplerCleaning out for Health reasonsLooking for something in particular (you’ll find it eventually)Moving to a new location

You may have more reasons to be working through decluttering or organizing your life, keep your eye on them…put them down on paper to hang around the house so you have reminders of what you are trying to accomplish.

And DON’T forget to reward yourself.  When you have completed something, take some time to pat yourself on the back.

Declutter Your Home Tips

Posted on August 21, 2010 by Sandy James

The beauty of a home is not measured by its size alone. Would you rather have a house the size of a mansion that looks like it was just hit by a hurricane hit or a modest-sized house where everything is neatly organized? The choice is yours. They say the home and everything about it speaks volumes about the ones who live there. So, if your home is as cluttered as a dumpsite, people may have a negative impression of you. But, if in the other hand, you have an immaculately tidy and pleasant house, your visitors will likely view you in a positive manner.  With that in mind, here are some suggestions to help you declutter your home.

First, make a detailed plan of attack. Decide which part of the house to clean first.  The

Clear Clutter Tips

Posted on August 21, 2010 by Sandy James

Stand in the middle of your living room. Get a feel for the area. But before you start to imagine nice things, your thoughts get interrupted by the alarmingly growing clutter that is threatening to swallow your house whole. You look over to your left, and you see books, piles of books, some dating back to your elementary school days.  There are piles of papers and magazines but you aren’t exactly sure what they are about or the last time you read them.

Now you glance to your right and you see your children’s toys sprawled all over the place, the empty pizza box from last night’s late movie marathon, or maybe the accumulated pizza boxes of many movie night marathons.  There’s trash, maybe some odds and ends, candy, hair brush, miscellaneous pieces of clothing.  And is that the corner of the wrapped baby gift (for your best friend that you thought you sent 4 months ago) sticking out from under heaped piles of the unfolded laundry in a chair?

You might wonder what to do first.  Burn down the house? Hold your head and cry? Sadly, there is no easy way out.  Burning down your house or crying won’t help you accomplish anything.  As long as you don’t burn down the house, there will still be clothes to put away, books and papers and mail to sort through, trash to be thrown away.  You made the mess.  You have to clean it up.

As daunting as it may seem, clutter clearing is not that hard.  The first thing that you have to do is to stay focused. Failing to prepare to succeed is like preparing to fail.  If possible, send the kids to the house of a friend or family member so that you can work in peace and without interruption.

Next, list all the clutter that you see, prioritize the list from most to least.  Where is the most clutter?  Where is the least?  This will help give you an idea about what you need to focus on first.  Before you know it, you’ll have cleared much of your clutter, you just need to put your mind to it and stay on task.

After you’re done with your list, take out everything. Place items no longer desired or needed into large bins for later sale, donation, or trash.  Next, gather all your cleaning materials. Once the area is clear of items, sweep or vacuum the floor, dust the cabinets or shelving, use glass cleaner on any mirrors or glass surfaces.

Clearing the clutter from your home or a room may be a tough practice, but it’s a good one.  Once you’ve experienced the positive results of having a well-organized, clean and tidy home, the better you will feel about the room and your home, and even yourself.  You’ll be happy you took the time to clear the clutter.

Ideal Kitchen Organizers For Your Kitchen

Posted on August 22, 2010 by Sandy James

The kitchen is one of the most important areas of the house. You make three meals a day, plus snacks, in your kitchen. This is why your kitchen needs to be regularly cleaned, put in order and kept in order.  The most common problem with kitchen organization is the ineffective use of valuable space within the cabinets and any other available storage. Cupboards and shelves are sometimes placed too far apart, leaving wasted space between that could have been used for storage, storage which could help prevent clutter. Luckily, there are many kitchen organizers available today that can be of tremendous help when attempting to maximize the storage and organization within your kitchen.

Like any other area you want to organize, you always start by assessing what you have and determining of those items, which you would like to keep or get rid of.  If you have items that you no longer use, consider getting rid of it.  Examples of these types of items could be cooking or baking utensils, dishes or appliances. Unnecessary items that you don’t need and don’t use will only accumulate and become the clutter in the kitchen you can’t stand and want to get rid of, so you might as well just go ahead and get rid of it now.  Sell, throw out, or donate items these items.

Using a standing kitchen organizer to store your cooking utensils near the stove is not only convenient but an excellent way to free of valuable counter or drawer space.  There are a lot of kitchen organizers you can use such as cabinet organizers that have wires with drawers and adjustable shelves to store dishes and bowls; there are also pull-out or slide-out organizers for your lower kitchen cabinets for easy access to your pots and pans. Aside from these, there are organizers that fit into your drawers that can help you organize your medications so that you can remember to take them regularly.  Similar organizers are useful with spices.  You should also remember to have a separate organizer for your sharp utensils, sprays and cleaners, and electric appliances that are best kept out of the reach of your children for safety reasons.

The large items that you regularly use in your kitchen such as the toaster, coffee maker, coffee bean grinder, or juicer can be placed on an appliance barn or Lazy-Susan for convenient access while keeping the counter free during times the items are not being used.  The silverware and dining utensils can be kept in drawer organizers or moveable caddies that can be left on the countertop or stowed in the pantry or Lazy-Susan when not in use.

These tips are relatively easy to follow and when applied, you’ll find that by using kitchen organizers you can enhance your work space and made effective use of the counter and storage space within your kitchen, improving functionality and effectiveness. Investing in kitchen organizers will help ensure you enjoy the full benefits of your kitchen.

Simple Ways to Organize Your Closet

Posted on August 22, 2010 by Sandy James

Do boxes, clothing, or hangers tumble down the moment you reach for something in your closet? If so, it’s time to organize your closet. Since getting dressed is a part of daily life, wouldn’t it be nice to begin each day in a stress-free manner, not having to rush around and panic or become frustrated because you can’t find what you are looking for?  Wouldn’t it be easier to decide which shoes, shirt, pants, skirt or etc. to wear and which top or shoes goes best with this or that if you could view all like items at the same time? Organizing your closet can make all this possible.

The first thing you need to do when starting a closet makeover is purge.  Get rid of all the items you don’t wear or want or no longer fit you.  Some people go by the One Year Rule:  if you haven’t worn it in one year, throw it out.  Some will hold onto clothing they haven’t worn or items they haven’t used for a little longer than one year, but this time frame is a good rule of thumb that works for many, but not all.  For example, if you take a major ski trip every two or three years and thus need to hold onto your ski equipment for those future events even though you haven’t used the clothing and equipment in the last year, it clearly makes sense to do that.  Use your head here and do what works best for you and your lifestyle.

Next, you need to assess each area of the closet that you want to organize and make a plan about which items you want placed in which area. You can make a list of all the things you are keeping, place them in certain sections and add labels if you like.  Labels can be added to both shelving and boxes/bins to help you get organized and stay that way.  Next you might segregate your things into three piles: things/clothing you presently use in a regular basis, things/clothing reserved for future use, things/clothing to sell, donate, or discard.

Once you have sorted everything out, you can start putting them back into your closet and categorize them in a way that makes the most sense to you.  For example you can arrange your clothes by season, by garment type and color or by practicality such as having a grab-and-go section. The items found in this section are those that can be worn everyday; your favorite pair of jeans, a plain white shirt that can be mixed and matched with anything. Then another section could be allotted for items you will wear for special occasions such as ruffled or beaded blouses.

If you do not have enough closet space, it might be nice to invest on shelving or storage bins to help organize and store shoes, sweaters, workout clothing, or other items you don’t use on a regular basis.  You may also use the back of your closet door for hanging your ties, scarves, belts, purses or other accessories. You can also change your hanging clothes rod placement.  For example, instead of one rod, you might be better off with two parallel rods at different heights to accommodate more clothes in your newly organized closet.

Having a new closet can help you save time and money and lower your stress. You will know exactly where to locate things and where to put them back. You might also find you save money by buying less new items, since you won’t buy identical items by mistake and can give new life to the old classics in your wardrobe by accessorizing with newer trends.  Best of all, your new and organized closet will make it a pleasure to get dressed every morning, it’s like having a private little boutique right in your own home that’s open 24 hours a day!

Simple Closet Organizing

Posted on August 23, 2010 by Sandy James

Whether you own a luxurious walk-in closet or a simple one, one thing is for sure, everyone enjoys having a clean and organized closet.  Who doesn’t like being able to find what you want, when you want? Organizing closets is not as hard as people think it is.  In fact, it’s really as easy as 1-2-3.

Group like items with like items.  Take everything out of your closet and place shoes with shoes, belts with belts, coats with coats, pants with pants, skirts with skirts, shirts with shirts, sweaters with sweaters, purses with purses, etc.Arrange.  Now that you’ve grouped your items, you can further arrange them in numerous ways.  You can arrange by color, by season, by fit (tight, fitted, loose), by length (long, medium, short), by material (silks, linens, wool, cotton, denim, etc.), or by purpose (every day wear, evening wear, formal wear.)  For shoes, arranging by color and heel height tends to be a rather effective method.Improve storage.  If you are finding it difficult to fit everything in and actually be able to browse the items, you might consider investing in some additional storage.  Use clear plastic bins with lids to stack and store off-season clothing or clothing that doesn’t fold cleanly and effectively.  Bulky clothing like sweats and hoodies and sweaters are often best stored in bins.  Remember you can stack bins.  This extends your storage vertically, which is highly important when dealing with small closets.  Shoes are another item that can be effectively and efficiently stored in clear plastic bins or even shoe boxes (if you saved them.)  Label your bins, even though they are clear, sometimes having a quick description written as well saves you from having to open the wrong box.

Cabinet, drawer, and shelving systems are additional options available to maximize your closet space and organization.  Items like undergarments and socks and stockings are best stored in drawers or bins.  Purses, hats, belts, scarves and ties can all effectively be managed with hanging or wall mounted organizers and dividers.

Whatever the case, whether your closet is tiny, average, or as big as most people’s bedrooms, taking the time to organize will lead to many benefits.  You will enjoy being able to see the full contents of your closet with a quick glance and be able to locate what you want in a quick and efficient manner.  With little effort, you can take charge of your cluttered closet and start enjoying it today!

Cash In: Start Now to Save Money for Christmas

Think Christmas ... in July? Sure--if you want to be prepared for a stress-free holiday season.

Starting holiday planning now makes sense ... and cents! Saving ahead for holiday expenses spreads the financial demands of the Christmas season over several months--and being prepared with a cash budget means you'll be less tempted to put holiday spending on credit cards.

Sister site Organized Christmas has some clever ways to start now to save money for a debt-free Christmas celebration:

Clever checkbook management can lead to a Christmas stash. When paying bills each month, "round down" the bank balance to the next even amount--say, from $967 to $900--by writing a dummy check for $67 and deducting it from the register. Don't cash it, but hold it for Christmas. Over a few months, those "round it down" amounts will add up to holiday funds.

How to find the best Organizing Stores

If you enjoy shopping on the internet, then you will be in for a treat with finding the best home organizing stores to shop at.  With their full on catalogues on display on their websites, you will be able to shop easily for what you want.

But let’s get started with reviewing our home declutter project.  If you have already started your home project, consider the requirements of the room in question.  Consider what home organizing items would benefit the room.  Think about extra storage that you can create with existing storage solutions.   More often than not, you will find that there is no need to rush out to the shops to buy a new organizing system.  You already have it in place at home, but maybe you need to do a bit of homework to maximize its use.

One example is the use of bookshelves.  If you don’t stack books and items logically and methodically in your bookshelves, you are not making the best use of your bookcase.  Restack your books to achieve the best use of your bookshelf.

Another classic example is storing items in cupboards that you don’t require.  These items are taking up precious space which could otherwise be utilized to store useful items.

Once you have made good progress with your declutter project, identify what organizational systems would help improve storage space and the utility of the space.  If you have any ideas about what kind of items you would like to look for in a home organization shop, write them down.

Feel free to browse the internet and have a look at the catalogues on offer by home organizing shops.  But be warned that this could be a very tempting approach which may set you back by many dollars.  There are lots of products on offer and you don’t want to overdo it by coming home with too many products.

Stick with a few basic items that you want to buy and in this particular situation, buying less is better than buying too much.  Go home and reorganize your room.  How does it look with the new organizational systems that you implemented?  It it’s looking in good shape, resist the urge to go out to the shops and buy more so called useful items.  There is a time and place for productive shopping.  Now get back to the task at hand and continue your decluttering efforts at home.

Once you have done some more reorganizing you might like to treat yourself to visiting the home organizing shop to buy a couple of items.  Be warned. Don’t over shop otherwise you will have another big clutter problem on your hands.  You know very well what I mean!

Declutter Day Tips 15

Get Your Clutter Madness under Control

Here are some handy tips on how to schedule a monthly declutter day session in your diary.

Select a Clutter Theme

Make your declutter session as fun as possible. Select a theme for the upcoming month. Your theme could be based around a location – cleaning your kitchen benchtops is a popular one, or getting rid of excess paper piling up in your study is usually another common area requiring attention.

If you plan on having a “heavy duty cleaning” theme, get all your equipment ready for your clean up session ie. bring out your trusty mop, cleaning bucket, cleaning supplies etc. Buy any special cleaning supplies in advance of time if your tasks include polishing or restoring old surfaces.

Before your scheduled monthly clean up day comes around, make a to list of all the things that will require organizing. If your theme is “cleaning the study”, your to do list may look something like:

Sort paperwork and place in your in-tray for filing;

Clear your office desk;

Vacuum the carpets;

Attend to any maintenance issues in your study, for example, buy printer cartridge or restock printer paper.

Make a date with yourself

Book an important appointment with yourself – set a date for your next declutter day session.

Decide on how many hours you can spare each month to reduce clutter in your home.

A couple of hours is an ideal length of time for a Clutter Control session to keep yourself motivated and energized to organize your home.

Save Money by Getting Organized

Who doesn’t like to save money? Taking action every month to reduce clutter helps you to save money each month. For example, you have fewer occasions to do last minute shopping on expensive items for your house, or your kitchen larder is organized in such a way that at any given time you know exactly what items you need to buy for your weekly grocery shop.

So let’s get organized today and schedule your next monthly declutter day.

So that you can enjoy the feel of a well organized house that has had a great declutter makeover!

Best Regards,
Debra

The Big 3 Clutter Problems

Last Calls for Clutter! – Reader Survey

A while ago, I surveyed readers to find out what their biggest clutter problems are.

Here are as decided by readers of Declutter Day Tips.

Finding Time to Declutter

Readers felt that it was not always easy to find time to reduce clutter in their homes. With their busy daily schedules – that is, working at full time jobs, taking the kids to school and after activities, and time spent on weekends socializing with family and friends, not much time is left to declutter and organize our homes.

Deciding what to do with all that Clutter

Readers felt that it was difficult to make decisions on what to do with all that “clutter”. ie. whether to keep an item, whether to reuse an item, whether to recycle it, or whether to throw it away.

Perfectionism

Lastly, but not least, striving for perfectionism was a stumbling block in trying to reduce clutter in the home and get organized. Readers expressed that they often found it difficult to get started because they wanted to achieve a perfect outcome. So what often happens is that they don’t get started at all.

Best Regards,
Debra

Four Life Saving Decluttering Tips

Do you know of any friends and family who tell you regularly about their latest acquisition from the shopping mall?

You get the feeling they go shopping very frequently, usually with some sort of rationale that a sale was on, and that they just couldn’t resist picking up some great bargains to bring home.

Does this sound familiar?

By the time the year is up,they might easily have purchased a couple of hundred new items for their house.

A good rule to apply is that for at least every two items that you throw away or donate, then, only then, should you even consider buying any new items for your house.

Off course, it might be preferable not to bring home any new stuff at all if you are trying to reduce clutter in your home!

Which brings me to the next few decluttering tips:

Why The Heck Bother With Decluttering Your Home?

Author: Lu Smith

Has a self-enforced captivity within your own home finally made you urgently open your eyes to the obstacle heaps hogging the living space you pay for?

So, you’ve finally noticed it. Brrr. If you feel a resistance to do something about it, and most clutter folks do, read on.

If you’re reading this line, then it at least means that you want to grab a hold of your life before the clutter rams it out the window.

You may say …”Yes, yes, but why bother?” … “What’s the bloody point?” After all, it all turns into a scrambled mess later on anyway.

The breaking point to do something about it is different for everyone.

It doesn’t matter what the point is. What matters is there is a reason in your life propelling you to make room for a fresh new space filled with flowing positive energy.

Some folks need to be shocked out of their boredom by a firestorm of mishaps around their own clutter (including health problems). Others get to it through pure willpower. And then, some “clutter bugs” get suddenly fired up by a vigorous craving to clean up their home because a burning need to change their lives just arrived.

And the easiest way of changing one’s life is by changing the surroundings. Doing it little by little, through a brand spanking new and wickedly effective purge of “decluttering” produces results fast.

Whatever works in getting you there is the right way to progress. But for the folks who wait forever until the mood hits, they better be careful.

They’ve become clutter bugs for a damn good reason. Often, it’s emotionally rooted and may run deep.

If you haven’t felt the urge to declutter in a long while, it may mean that you’re getting immune to it. So, if you are immune to it nothing can happen, right?

Oops. This is dangerous. Liking a clutter bug’s lifestyle can lead a person into deeper emotional waters without ever realizing it. Could one day be too late to change? Maybe.

Are you going to wait and see which way the “maybe” scales tip?

It’s perfectly fine to ask your good friends for help if you need it. Your friends may have been hinting why you need to de-junk for a while anyway

Three Simple Steps for Decluttering Kitchens

Author: Dr. Isabella Santorini

Life simply works best when we have our physical environment really work. When we’re organized, we can think more clearly, we’re more efficient, and we can take on projects that have lain dormant for months or even years.

When my kitchen is clean, the whole house seems easier to keep picked up. But a simple back-up in doing dishes, and the whole kitchen can look like a disaster. But the more cleaned out our kitchens are, the easier it is to clean the entire room in 10 minutes or less, even when it looks like it has been hit by a tornado.

But good, lasting organization doesn’t happen overnight. It is crucial to start smart because decluttering takes a lot of effort at the beginning. I strongly recommend getting expert advice in order to see results quickly and avoid getting bogged down in too much

Declutter Your Home By Utilizing Self Storage

Author: Simply Self Storage

If you are like a majority of other families these days, your home has a good deal of clutter in it. Beware of families who claim to have no clutter – they usually do, but are just better about hiding it! Instead of having your clutter take over your life, or instead of shoving your clutter away into an attic or closet, use a self storage unit to help declutter your home. How does clutter accumulate? You could spent a week each year cleaning out every closet and storage area within your home and yet six months later, you will already have more clutter to content with. Clutter accumulates because we do not live life in a frozen mode. Instead, because we live life in fast forward, we accumulate a lot of items from shopping and our offices and our activities and our children’s schools and as those items follow us home, they begin to pile up and give out homes cluttered appearance. Clutter can be quite overwhelming – your home can even reach a stage of seeming more than just cluttered and going over the line to downright messy. Instead of having to live in a messy home, where you are no longer comfortable and where you are ashamed to invite guests, start working towards a solution today. Self storage units are the perfect answer for families who have more possessions than they know what to do with! You can use a self storage unit to start decluttering your home today. The first step to take when you are decluttering your home is to go room by room and take every single item out of that room that does not belong there. Bring all of these items into one centralized and open space. If you can return an item to another room where it actually belongs, do so. But leave all items that have no place in your home within the pile that you have created. The next step to take is to clear out your closets and your attic. There may be items in those areas that you have not seen, used, or needed in years. You can added these boxes or loose items to the items you have already accumulated by cleaning out all of your rooms. Now that all of your potential clutter items are together, it’s time to start making important decisions. You can classify your items in one of three ways: garbage, store for later use, unpack for immediate use. Depending on your classification will affect what you end up taking to your self storage unit. How can you decide to throw something away? That’s easy. If you have not used an item in the past several years and cannot conceive of a reason to use it in the foreseeable future, it’s no longer necessary to keep. If someone else may find use from it, donate it to a charity. If not, toss it! Other reasons to throw away items can include if they are in very poor condition. If you have any items that are just absolutely falling apart, it’s time to say good bye and throw them away. Other items to throw away are those that are simply useless – receipts that are not needed for returns or tax purposes, programs to events you can’t even remember attending, or anything similar in nature. If you unpack an item for immediate use, you need to understand that immediate use does not include putting it to the side to be forgotten. It means that once the item is placed in the area of the home where it should be used, it actually will be used. Do not keep an item for immediate use that you, in fact, are unsure if it will be used. Otherwise, you’ll just be building your clutter back up. For everything else that has not been thrown or given away or put into use, you can repackage it to take to your self storage unit. Remember to pack these items in an orderly fashion, keeping all related items together and carefully labeling your boxes so you can easily put your hands on these items in the future as soon as you need them. Finally, remember that clutter is continual. You should understand that your first trip to your self storage unit will not be your last. Instead, you may be heavily reliant on your self storage unit in the future to help keep your home decluttered.
